Why it comes first

Understanding changes the problem.

Confusion makes recovery harder. Clear models make it easier to see what is happening, why it is happening, and where effort is best placed.

Many people interpret addiction as a simple failure of willpower. That explanation is too narrow. It ignores the relationship between conscious intention, subconscious behaviour, physical condition, dopamine, executive function and environment.

Clarity brings those elements into one picture. The goal is not to remove personal responsibility, but to make responsibility more useful by directing it towards the parts of the system that can actually be changed.

What follows

Understanding creates the basis for strategy.

Clarity gives the later strategy a clear target. Part Two then arranges the different elements of recovery into a coherent approach.
